The Midgard Serpent it Norse mythology is the enormous serpent encircling the world of men (Midgard).
Jormundgand is the offspring of Loki and Angerboda, and is the brother of The Fenriswolf and Hel. It was originally called Jormundgand (Jǫrmungandr, "the great staff"), but the aces threw him into the ocean that surrounds the world, because they wanted more control over the monsters. There it has lain like a sea serpent and eaten itself bigger and bigger, eventually becoming so big that it bites its own tail. Thus it was named the Midgard Serpent, because it envelops the whole of Midgard.
Under Ragnarok the Midgard Serpent comes up on land, and meanders over fields and meadows. Then shall Dare fight it, and kill it. Tor himself gets his field wound in this duel, and dies.
