Odin
Odin is the oldest, most powerful and foremost of the Æsir Norse mythology. He is one-eyed and the wisest of the Æsir after he sacrificed an eye to drink from the Jotnen Mime's Well of Knowledge, located at the root of Yggdrasil. He lives in Valhalla, and from his high seat he can see everything that happens in the world. Sometimes Odin walks among the people - then he wears a wide-brimmed hat and a blue cloak.
Family
Odin is the son of Bor and the Jot woman Bestla. Together with his brothers Vile and Ve, he created the world in the dawn of time. He is married to Frigg, who is the most powerful goddess and has a son Balder with her. With the goddess Jord he has a son Thor. With Rind he got Våle, and with Grid he got Vidar. Other sons are Ty, Brage and Hod.
Odin uses wine as both food and drink, he gives all other food to the wolves Gere and Freke. The ravens Hugin and Munin usually sit on Odin's shoulders when they are not flying around the world to see what is happening. Sleipner is Odin's eight-legged horse, which is faster than all other horses.
Odin owns the spear Gungne, which never gets stuck, and the gold ring Draupne, from which eight equally heavy rings drip every ninth night. Both the spear and the ring are made by the dwarves.
Odin God of War
Odin is the god of warriors. He lets his valkyries select those who will fall in battle, and receive them in Valhall (choice, "the fallen"). There, the dead warriors train every day to be prepared when ragnarok is coming. Then Odin will be swallowed up The Fenriswolf, but is avenged by his son Vidar.
God of sorcery, wisdom and poetry
Odin is also called "the god of the hanged". IN Håva goal there is an obscure passage where it is said that he himself hung nine nights on the gallows, wounded with a spear and "given to himself". He is altogether the god of mystery and sorcery and at the same time the god of wisdom and divination, knowledge of runes and poetry. By seducing Gunnlod, the jotnen Suttung's daughter, he gets hold of Suttungsmjøden, which gives the gift of poetry.
