In the Norse mythology female death senses. Odin sends them out to keep an eye on all wars and battles, and lets them "kjósa val" (choose casualties), i.e. decide who will fall in battle.
Valkyrie takes the fallen with her to Åsgard, where they become unicorns. Only the truly valiant warriors are worthy of becoming a ruler, because in Åsgard they must fight side by side with the gods. In Valhall, Odin and Frøya divide the fallen between them - half go to Odin in Valhall, while the other, the less bloodthirsty, and more honorable, come to Frøya in Folkvang.
Clad in full armor and armed, they can ride through air and water, all over the world. They always travel in packs. In Valhall, they serve mead and meat from the pig Særimne, and entertain aesirs and einherjs. Some Valkyries cause discord between the Einherians, and can therefore only be used for the lowest pursuits.
